Tips on Protecting Your Concrete Through Midwest Winters

We get it, brand new concrete is a big long term investment. That’s why at CMC Solutions, we want to remind you of our best tips for protecting that investment and maintaining your concrete beyond the sealant services we provide.

1. Remember to Remove Ice and Snow from your Exterior Concrete.

These Iowa winters can be brutal on your concrete, especially if you don’t take the time to maintain your snow and ice removal. If left un-kept, the snow and ice CAN and WILL create peeling and pitting in your parking lot, driveway or even road. This is why we recommend being prepared for winter storms either by investing in equipment, or contacting a local snow removal service provider.

2. A Concrete Sealer Should be Applied Annually

Because of the porous nature of concrete, a topical sealant is recommended for protection against Iowa winters (yes, we can do that for you). But beyond topical sealants, there are also joint sealants for quality concrete maintenance. Contact us today for a quote.

3. Use of Salt or De-Icing Crystals Can Cause Concrete Damage.

Instead of the traditional harsh de-icing salt methods, try clean sand for traction on your driveway and walkways instead. This will help extend the life of your concrete and make sure you are still providing traction for your driveway, parking lot or sidewalk in Des Moines.

4. Do Not Park Vehicles Outside on Concrete for Long Periods.

During these rough Iowa winters, our tires are covered in road salts, ice and snow. Melting and compression of these items can result in spots for concern on your driveway, parking lot or sidewalk. So whenever possible, try to keep these areas clear of heavy vehicles and machinery.
